The U.S. Embassy Abuja has suspended visa appointments in the nation’s capital, directing applicants to monitor their emails for details on rescheduled interview dates.
The embassy in recent post on its X page on Thursday, stated that while visa services are halted in Abuja, operations will continue at the U.S. Consulate General Lagos.
According to the mission, Applicants with scheduled visa interviews in Abuja should check their email addresses for further information regarding new appointment dates and next steps.
The Embassy further clarified that services for American citizens in Abuja remain available only in emergencies and strictly by appointment.
It reads, “U.S. Embassy Abuja is closed for visa appointments.
Applicants should check their email for details on rescheduled appointments.
“Visa operations at U.S.
Consulate General Lagos continue. American citizen services are available in emergencies and by appointment.”
The development follows a recent travel advisory issued by the United States government, warning its citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to security concerns in several states.
Further details from the advisory show that the United States ordered the departure of some embassy staff and their families due to worsening security concerns, while maintaining Nigeria under a Level 3 advisory, urging citizens to reconsider travel.
About 23 states were placed under a stricter Level 4 warning, with travel strongly discouraged due to risks such as terrorism, kidnapping, armed crime and civil unrest.
The advisory also highlighted widespread violent crimes, potential terrorist attacks in public places, and concerns over limited healthcare services, advising Americans who must travel to remain cautious, avoid large gatherings and put personal safety measures in place.
