The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday inspected a vandalised bridge pole at Vin-Niger, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, assuring residents that the structural integrity of the bridge had not been compromised.
Sanwo-Olu said the bridge remained safe, stressing that the work previously carried out on it had not been affected by the vandalism. The governor, however, disclosed that some fittings used to secure the bridge had been excavated and removed by vandals. He warned that the Lagos State Government would track down those responsible for the act, including persons involved in buying and selling stolen public infrastructure materials, and ensure that they were brought to justice regardless of their status or background.Sanwo-Olu described the vandalism of public assets as shameful and unacceptable, particularly at a time when the government was investing heavily in infrastructure across the state. He also expressed concern over the continued vandalism of infrastructure in Festac Town, citing the destruction of drainage slabs and theft of iron rods on Second and Seventh Avenues. The governor urged residents to take responsibility for protecting public infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities to the authorities.“When you see something, you should say something. Government is not going to be there 24/7. People should know that they also have a responsibility for themselves and for the government to speak out,” he said.Sanwo-Olu commended the Lagos State Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch and members of the Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, for their intervention and prompt response to the vandalised section of the bridge. While addressing residents, traders and commuters during his inspection of Alaba Rago and Orile, the governor said significant progress had been made in clearing the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor. He said the inspection was also part of his administration’s efforts to clean up the corridor and safeguard public infrastructure.Sanwo-Olu assured residents that his administration remained committed to protecting public assets, ensuring the safety of road users and maintaining law and order across the state. He pledged that the government would continue to collaborate with security agencies to keep Lagos safe and secure while creating opportunities for law-abiding residents.
